Secure, Straight Forward Payments with the Fantastic Square Reader & Dock

With such a plethora of small businesses appearing online it’s no secret that people are constantly on the lookout for ever secure means to make and receive payments. So when we heard about ‘Square’ a revolutionary new way for people to accept chip and pin and contactless payments we simply had to find out more.

Getting signed up with Square is an amazingly straight forward procedure. All you need to do is sign up for a free account on squareup.com. From here you can accept payments via digital invoices over the phone or with the virtual terminal on your own website through Square’s eCommerce integrations. On top of this, Square also offers the ability to take payments in person through the means of their Square Reader which accepts chip, Mobile Device payments and PIN and contactless payments. We were lucky to be given a chance to check out the Square reader and the additional Square Dock which keeps the Reader charged at all times.

So, ever eager to try out both units and test just how straightforward and effective they’d be to use, we quickly unboxed Square Reader and Square Dock.

Straight out of the box it’s clear to see the aesthetic of the Square Reader and Square Dock have been carefully considered along with their functionality. The Square Reader is phenomenally sleek with an attractive minimalist look and feel. It’s also comfortable to hold making it a real pleasure to  hold making it a worthy addition to any business which interacts one to one with customers.

Square tells you straight away they take a flat rate of 1.75% for chip and PINn and contactless payments which is pretty impressive and competitive to say the least. All compatible with Apple Pay, Google Pay, and all major cards including Visa, MasterCard and Amex. Pairing was also very straightforward – by simply downloading the Square point-of-sale app and connecting the reader to our Apple iPhone via bluetooth within minutes the Square reader was good to go. To activate you just need to press and hold the button on the Square reader until the lights flash orange. Then once you place the reader next to your device and release the button it’s paired! The Square app was also particularly simple to navigate and setup – once you’ve entered the relevant details of your products and accounting you can just dive straight in and take contactless payments on the go.

For chip and PIN payments your customers just need to insert their card into the card reader and then use an accompanying paired device (e.g. phone/tablet ) to enter their PIN. For accompanying tablets you can also purchase the Square stand which turns your iPad into a suitably authentic point of sale sytem. Again it’s remarkably easy and quick to setup and we were astounded by just how soon the whole system was up and running.

What’s really impressive is the fact that money will be in your account within one to two business days. Also receipts can be sent via email or text message, or if you prefer by printing them out via Square’s own printing peripheral. You also have the ability to apply discounts or even add a tip on top of retrieving printed or emailed sales reports and managing your inventory in real time. Meaning you’ll always be able to keep your stock up to date from wherever you are.

We were also particularly impressed with the Square reader’s battery life. We’ve seen first hand when battery operated point of sale systems have run out of juice in the midst of a busy day and that’s something which evidently no small business wants to find themselves dealing with. With Square reader you’ve the peace of mind that the battery life will last when you need it most.

But the accompanying Square Dock also ensures this guarantee by offering an attractive, stylish means of powering your Square Reader without it looking out of place on your counter top. We loved the way the Square Reader seamlessly slides into the dock and is kept at the ideal angle for customers to insert their cards or tap a contactless payment.

The other great thing about the Square Dock is it’s long cord and non-slip base, meaning there’s little risk of it slipping from your counter top and is kept exactly where you want it to be.

We were blown away by the Square Reader and accompanying Square Dock. Compared to similar point of sale systems they’re incredibly intuitive with a range of features and functions which make it stand head and shoulders above the competition. They also look great and both very competitively priced.
